Our History
Galeed was opened for public worship in October 1868. The original church and congregation were a secession from The Tabernacle in West Street. The secession was an amicable one, over differences which had arisen mainly over the doctrine of Baptism. The first pastor at Galeed, Mr Henry White, called the chapel “Galeed” with reference to the witness between the Patriarch Jacob and his father-in-law Laban when they parted company (as recorded in Genesis 31 vs. 47-48). Mr White obviously desired that God would watch over both The Tabernacle and Galeed, that they might exist together in unity, and seeking each other's good, in spite of their differences.
The church has been favoured with a pastor for most of its history. Several of these have been well known. Two, James Dennett and James K. Popham were editors of The Gospel Standard magazine.
A history of the chapel was published to mark the 150th Anniversary in October 2018. This gives many interesting details about the chapel and its history.
